2013: The year I turned 25

Drawing spree at Ladakh, September 2013

This year (more like the second half of the year) has been eventful, to say the least. And all in every good way possible.

/ I now own my first Lamy, thanks to P. Writing will never be the same again.

/ Someone spotted me drawing at this gig, and decided to write about me.

/ The girl gang and I finally got started with our photo-blog.

/ Trusha and I started this seemingly never ending, but definitely enjoyable sketchbook swap project.

/ Thanks to Akhila, I participated in Mirror of the Open Road, where my work was displayed as part of the Wilding Festival in London.

/ Rain playlists. Five years running.

/ I made it to Kyoorius DesignYatra, after seven years (more on that later, maybe). Bonus points to this trip for the chance to hang out with other awesome designers, writers and the cutest pup.

/ My essay was published as part of an anthology on design in India, which was released at KDY.

/ I fell in love with the skies and mountains in Ladakh.

/ I got to meet close friends in other cities, about five times – more than half of it thanks to work-travel. Can never complain about that!

/ The Illustrator's Collective (Bakula, Kalyani, Trusha and I) had our first exhibition in Bangalore. I've inflicted veil-vision on too many people now.

/ Kalyani gifted me an original. For me, this piece is a memory of the day that we managed to meet again after three years. Our exhibition happened almost exactly a year later. (@Universe, conspiring much?)

/ 15 books to read this year? Challenge accomplished.

Here's to a whole new year full of travel, drawings, reading, music and good food. Hello 2014!

Hidden in Plain Sight

People and their interactions, both with each other and with a space, make for some wonderful observations. Veils have a curious presence in a public space. Do they actually hide a woman or do they make her more conspicuous? Is visibility - or lack of it - a choice that we consciously make? These are simple everyday vignettes, seen while nursing a cup of chai by a window, or as an idle passerby on the street.

With this set of illustrations, I've explored a technique of layering (and removing) colour and black oil pastel crayons. This treatment is something I have wanted to try out on a full illustration for a while now and the technique lends itself perfectly to the theme - an absolute black is scratched away to reveal a scene around black shrouded women, who appear to be Hidden in Plain Sight.

Hidden in Plain Sight was exhibited at Kynkyny Art Gallery as part of My Cup of Tea, our first exhibition as the Illustrator's Collective. This showcase has been special; apart from the fact that I got to exhibit my work at a gallery with three other talented friends, these illustrations are the biggest ones I have done entirely by hand.

Write to me at halftonelemon(at)gmail(dot).com for pricing.

The Illustrator's Collective

The Illustrator's Collective is Bakula Nayak, Kalyani Ganapathy, Trusha Sawant, and me - four people with varying styles and interests, brought together by a love for narrating through the drawn image. Through an amazing chain of events (involving a himym-like story of how we met, too many teas, and countless emails, google docs and hangouts), the four of us are exhibiting our work this Friday onwards, at Kynkyny Art in Bangalore.

*applause + drumroll*

'My Cup of Tea' is the first edition of the Collective, and our first exhibition together. Drop in to meet us and see some new illustrations that we have worked on specially for this exhibit, across varying media, techniques and thoughts!

We have daily updates on us, our inspirations, and behind the scenes of our works and the exhibition over on our facebook page.

Matt Littlewood @ Plantation House

After many months, I went to Plantation House for the monthly jazz gigs that Shalini hosts. There was Matt Littlewood on the saxophone, Vijji Cheyyur on the guitar and Naveen Kumar on the bass. Such a fun evening. I think nothing can come close to drawing to jazz.

The Shape of Jazz @ Plantation House

Concerts and gigs seem to be the only places I draw at these days. There never seems to be much time otherwise to sit down with a book and colours.

Aman Mahajan and Mishko M'ba played us music inspired by Ornette Coleman. "It is...fr(h)ee jazz..." as Mishko said in his lovely accent. If I ever catch Mishko playing again, I am going to spend the whole time drawing just him and his long long long dreadlocks (ankle length if you must know).

And the next time, I'll manage a better panorama of Shalini's store. I'd love to just sit and draw only the clothes even!

Konarak Reddy @ Plantation House

A new (and biggest yet) book inaugurated at another gig at Plantation House. I never would have thought that PH could hold as many people as there were that day!

It's easy to drift off into a dream while Konarak Reddy plays. But it's definitely worthwhile paying attention to his hands moving across the guitar too. Aah, such beautiful music.

Jazz and Improv @ Plantation House

Was at this gig at Plantation House. While I've been to the store for exhibitions by some favourite artists, I've never managed to make it to one of the evenings of music that Shalini organises at the store. It is an awesome way to use such a beautiful space.

Bengaluru Habba 2012: 2

The second set of gigs that I managed to attend, with Sparkles and Baki, were Infusion Jazz followed by Warren Mendosa with the Blackstrat Blues.

I got into a mood for drawing even before Infusion started playing, mostly because of the acoustic upright bass.
Infusion

There was Frijo Francis on piano, Victor Francis on drums (someone in the audience really loved him; she kept calling out for Victor through the gig), Dominic Yesudas on acoustic upright bass (or the nattily dressed young man, as the announcer described him), and Manoj George on the electric violin.

Frijo was on the keytar a couple of times- he was even making it scat sing at one point. Genius that I am, I was staring from one artist to the next trying to figure out who was scat singing until I realised it was the keytar!

Next up was Warren Mendosa and The Blackstrat Blues, by which time a quick quest for food cost us my sketching-condusive seat close to the stage.  After stumbling around with a tray of fries, we found a seat way up in what must have been the windiest and coldest part of the amphitheatre.

Warren Mendosa+Blackstrat Blues

Cold enough for initial drawing excitement to wear off and be replaced by the instinct to keep my hands warm (while still trying to smuggle the now cold fries into my mouth).

Bengaluru Habba 2012: 1

Bengaluru Habba happened again this time (amidst mild panic that I had actually missed the entire fest :P ). I caught only the jazz gigs. Sniffly and P were company for the first gig.

Day 1 of the jazz festival featured Sanjay Divecha and Aman Mahajan, followed by Moon Arra.

The event started amazingly late though, so we didn't hang around for the second act- the UB City amphitheatre on a January evening is quite cold.

Ruhaniyat

Ruhaniyat, an all India Sufi and Mystic music festival was in Bangalore last month. 2011 was the eleventh edition across India, and the seventh in Bangalore- this was the first time that I'd even heard of it.

True to the spirit of the festival, the 'concert' was held on a cool winter night under open skies and huge trees outside the Jayamahal Palace Hotel. A total lunar eclipse which happened right above our heads through the entire show made it all a lot more magical.

There was an interesting line up of artistes, from all over the country. Writer, Gulo, S, K, D and I managed to catch seats a little far out, with many many heads and craning necks obstructing views. I had to peep through the gaps mostly to make some tiny drawings of the artistes.

Mystic Songs / Abdul Rashid Hafiz and group, Kashmir

Sufi Kalam / Shakur Khan and group, Rajasthan
Baul songs / Parvathy Baul, West Bengal

In spite of singing being the focus in this ensemble, the Khartal player (I cannot recall his name) was the most theatrical and stole everyone's attention, what with his expressions and little dances while he played.

Parvathy Baul was, by far, my favourite. Everything about her fascinated me- her clear clear voice, the knee length dreadlocks that whirled about her when she swirled, the way she seemed to be lost in dance sometimes while singing. Oh, she was the highlight of the night.

Sema / Whirling Dervishes, Turkey

I think a lot of people were hoping for a Khwaja Mere Khwaja moment with this piece. It might have been more awe inspiring if the Dervishes weren't confined to the small stage.

Sufi Qawwali / Shameem Nayeem Ajmeri and group, Jaipur

{The concert also featured Bharud and Abhang by Avdhoot Gandhi from Maharashtra}.

Marigolds and Mallipoos

I am now, most probably, the official family kalyanam sketchbook stalker. Another cousin's wedding and a slightly different level of involvement from me this time, as wedding-invite-designer and sole representative of family in the 20-25 years age group (Excluding Brother Mark of course. But then, the bride's brother is not counted in such things). Saving self from converting to maamidom were the U-19 sister and one pithukuli from Oz.

Part of duties this time involved secretly feeding cousin/bride pieces of Bournville (yes, she earned it) and attempting to strike lame deals with the new athimber, whilst doing Matrix-style dodging of smoke from the pyre. The vadiyar conducting the ceremonies then was kind enough to explain to us yeng folk the point of what was happening at appropriate junctures. What he says here "...ippo onga expenses ellathayum avaa authorise pannuva" translates to "...now she will authorise all your expenses". Yes, cheap thrills :P
