The blue moleskine is my smallest sketchbook till date. The size definitely helped, given the conditions that I was drawing in – extreme sun, or strong cold winds, drawing while doing interviews and making notes (was there on work, remember), or simply on the go. That said, when I was faced with the brown moleskine, it suddenly seemed...huge.

But the show must go on :P I'd used up the last pages of blue book drawing gorgeous wrinkled women at a monastery, and when the performance that we were all there for started in a frenzied blur of brocade and colour, there was no time to hesitate on the first page of new book. Melodramatic I am, but who doesn't have that fear of new-book-first-page?

The Champs, a ritual dance, began slowly enough. The masked monks moved in tiny measured arcs, while continuing to move in a larger circle. Further away, other monks handled the instruments that backed up this dance; cymbals, drums and a loooong trumpet. The dance slowly picked up pace, until all we could watch was the brocade fabric whirling by and glimpses of the scary faces on the monks' aprons. The dance is traditionally performed by hundreds of monks (what we witnessed was a very scaled down version). The performance brings alive to watchers, the sights of ghouls and demons and monsters, so that when they are encountered eventually, there is no fear.

The Kali statue in the shrine was huge, and covered completely by a cloth. All we could see was eleven huge arms - six and five - that rose on either side of the veiled Kali. The only thing separating us from the idol, were lines of thin rope with rupee notes hanging on them like a clothes line. More offerings.
Somehow being that close spooked me out a bit, despite the veil.

Religion is everywhere, the prayer flags are overwhelming, there are prayer wheels at and monasteries at regular intervals, and yet it was never imposing or infringing (like all the other extremist religion based politics). There is a certain sense of peace and tranquility that are acquired on entering Ladakh. I think it mostly has to do with living in the constant presence of humbling grandeur like the mountains. I came back in a state of zen that I have never been in, and quickly lapsed in to acute mountain withdrawal symptoms. Ok I just made that up, but after spending 10 days seeing mountains and riotous prayer flags in every direction I turned, it was quite depressing to return to traffic and Congress/BJP posters lining the roads.

I first went to the Himalayas when I was 16. It was the first time I was in the mountains, the first time I saw hail and snow, slept in a sleeping bag, and the first time I went ten days trekking from campsite to campsite. I have been dreaming of the day that I could return to the mountains, and it finally happened this year, higher and further up north. In September, the boss, C and I made our way to Ladakh (On work. Booyaaah), in conditions much less "campsite" than my last trip.

The most spectacular 360° landscape ever, sun on my back, a decent stash of pens and TWO moleskine notebooks (gifts from the niece)...definitely the most I have drawn on a ten day trip.
The Illustrator's Collective is Bakula Nayak, Kalyani Ganapathy, Trusha Sawant, and me - four people with varying styles and interests, brought together by a love for narrating through the drawn image. Through an amazing chain of events (involving a himym-like story of how we met, too many teas, and countless emails, google docs and hangouts), the four of us are exhibiting our work this Friday onwards, at Kynkyny Art in Bangalore.
There was Matt Littlewood on the saxophone, Vijji Cheyyur on the guitar and Naveen Kumar on the bass. Such a fun evening. I think nothing can come close to drawing to jazz.

This year, Kyoorius and British Council teamed up to offer one day workshops on design writing, conducted by William Shaw across three cities - Delhi, Bombay and Bangalore. Participants at this workshop were invited to pitch stories for a book that would be released at the Kyoorius Design Yatra. It has been a while since we took a break from Little Design Book, and I was glad for this opportunity to indulge in writing about design.

Creating Change features twelve essays by designers, architects and writers, discussing design and its possibilities in India. Many thanks to Aanchal Sodhani (British Council) and William Shaw for their guidance in shaping the written pieces and Shumi Bose (Blueprint magazine) , Patrick Burgoyne (Creative Review) and Robert Wilson for the online masterclasses.

It been over one hundred years since the suffragettes fought for the right to vote. The world can change many times over in that sort of time. But for some reason, an idea as simple as women's rights is still an ongoing struggle in many countries, including India.

The voices and actions of many women over several years has brought us where we are today, slightly better than our predecessors. Yet we still seem to be fighting the same battles. On the streets. At work. At home. These are vignettes of some of those everyday fights I see around me, where I live.

The three pieces take inspiration from the colours of the suffragette movement – purple, white and green – and re-imagine what they might mean in today's world.
It's that time of the year again! Much thankses to Akash and Sushmeit for new music introductions.
This is also the first of my rain playlists to feature music by friends – Shilpa and Bindhu. Go say hi.
Earlier this year, Akhila had invited me to participate in 'Mirror of the Open Road' - an exhibition that is part of the multi-arts Wilding Festival. The event commemorates the memory of Emily Wilding Davison, a suffragette who gave up her life for the movement a 100 years ago.
28 artists from 8 countries are participating in the exhibition, which is at St. George's Church, London. I'm terribly excited to be a part of this, and really wish I could be there.
More images of my entry in a later post.
People in London, do visit the festival! :)
I spent this year's Good Friday - Easter weekend in Cochin/Kochi, with SM and her family at their beautiful new home.
In the three years since my first visit here, I seem to have lost my tolerance for sitting down to sketch in extremely sunny spots - the yellow face... it burns our skin it doessss - Bangalore has spoilt me whattodo.

This year I finally learnt about the Way of the Cross, although I decided to stay back at the church and draw other Ammachis who weren't up for braving the sun either.
The heat notwithstanding, the weekend was full of hot, sweet chaaya, in mugs and cups and coffee pots. This year, Shoo and I planned a mini kutcheri-hopping session.
(Our new year's eve kutcheri plan got cancelled though, I was looking forward to that).

The first kutcheri we got to was Sandeep Narayan singing at Krishna Gana Sabha, accompanied by Nagai Sriram (violin), Dr. Umayalpuram K Sivaram (mridangam) and Dr.Karthik (ghatam). Gradwolf came along for this one. Highlight was having such a senior artiste like UKS autographing the drawing and showing it off to some people around!
I drew Sandeep a year ago (accompanied by Shoo, again), and Dr. Karthik early in 2011- this time I think I've managed to get the resemblance better. I didn't realise that until someone named all the artistes I drew without any prompting.

Sandeep's kutcheri was followed by Bombay Jayshree at Music Academy, but not before a quick stopover at the sabha canteen. Some day I will manage to get tickets/seats at Music Academy that will give me a better (closer) view of the artistes. Until then I will make the most of my balcony views.
"It is...fr(h)ee jazz..." as Mishko said in his lovely accent. If I ever catch Mishko playing again, I am going to spend the whole time drawing just him and his long long long dreadlocks (ankle length if you must know).
